Theo Bastiaens, Open University of The Netherlands

Executive Committee Chair

Biography: Prof. Dr. Theo J. Bastiaens is rector of the Open Universiteit in the Netherlands. He is professor of Educational Technology and has contributed to numerous international publications in his field. Bastiaens was Vice-President for Digitalization and Internationalisation at the Fernuniversität in Hagen.He was previously Vice President for Digitalisation & International Affairs at the Fernuniversität in Hagen, Germany.  His specific research interests are in Instructional Design and E-Learning. He has published extensively in this area.

 

 

 

Mark Brown, National Institute of Design Learning, Ireland

Executive Committee Member: 2017 – 2023

Biography: Ireland’s first Professor of Digital Learning and Director of the National Institute for Digital Learning at Dublin City University. Prior to taking up this position in 2014, Mark was Director of the National Centre for Teaching and Learning at Massey University in New Zealand where he was also President of the New Zealand Association for Open, Flexible and Distance Learning and Treasurer of the Australasian Society for Computers in Learning in Tertiary Education. In 2017, the Commonwealth of Learning identified Mark as a world leader in Open, Online and Distance Learning. Mark currently chairs the Innovation in Teaching and Learning Steering Committee for the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU) and is an Executive Committee member and Fellow of the European Distance and E-learning Network.

 

Lorenzo Cantoni, USI-Universita della Svizzera Italiana, Switzerland

Biography: Lorenzo Cantoni graduated in Philosophy and holds a PhD in Education and Linguistics. He is full professor at USI – Università della Svizzera italiana (Lugano, Switzerland), Faculty of Communication Sciences, where he is director of the Institute for Communication Technologies. He is also scientific director of the laboratories webatelier.net, NewMinE Lab: New Media in Education Lab, and eLab: eLearning Lab.
His research interests are where communication, education and new media overlap, ranging from computer mediated communication to usability, from eLearning to eTourism and digital Fashion, from ICT4D to eGovernment.

 

 

Rhonda Christensen, University of North Texas, USA

Biography: Rhonda Christensen, Ph.D. is Research Professor in Learning Technologies in the College of Information at the University of North Texas. She is co-director of the Institute for the Integration of Technology into Teaching and Learning. She serves as the Chair of the IT Council for the Society for Information Technology in Teacher Education (SITE). Her research interests are the impact of technology integration in education, STEM education in middle schools and mobile learning in education.

 

 

 

Gayle Davidson Shivers, University of South Alabama, USA

Executive Committee Member: 2013 – 2013

Biography: Gayle V. Davidson-Shivers is a professor in Instructional Design and Development at the University of South Alabama. She’s been an Ed Media Executive Committee member since 2013. In her department, Counseling & Instructional Science, she is the Foundations Program Coordinator and developed two certificate programs: Human Performance Improvement and Instructional Design and Development for graduate students. She advises doctoral and master’s students and teaches online and blended courses in instructional design and performance improvement. Her research also focuses on online learning and instructional strategies.

 

 

Martin Ebner, Graz Univ. of Technology, Austria

Biography: Martin Ebner is currently head of the Department Educational Technology at Graz University of Technology and therefore responsible for all university wide e-learning activities. He holds an Adjunct Prof. on media informatics and works also at the Institute for Interactive Systems and Data Science as senior researcher. His research focuses strongly on e-learning, mobile learning, learning analytics, social media and Open Educational Resources. Martin has given a number of lectures in this area as well as workshops and keynotes at international conferences. Sarah Howard, University of Wollongong, Australia

Executive Committee Member and Past Chair: 2023 – 2025

Biography: Sarah Howard is an Associate Professor of Digital Technologies in Education, at the University of Wollongong, in Australia, and a Visiting Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium. Her research looks at technological innovation and educational change in schools and higher education. Specifically, her recent work considers how educational data is designed, captured and made meaningful for teachers and learners. This work involves collaboration with data scientists and artificial intelligence engineers to design new ways of capturing digital technology use in teaching and learning across physical and digital spaces. She has extensive experience collaborating with practitioners in her research and industry stakeholders.

 

Catherine Fulford, University of Hawaii at Manoa

Executive Committee Member and Past Chair: 2009 – 2023

Biography: Catherine P. Fulford, Ph.D. is a full Professor in Learning Design and Technology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in the United States. She has served on the EdMedia Executive Committee since 2009 and served as Chair from 2014 to 2017. Dr. Fulford with the help of her students produced six YouTube videos for AACE to improve participation, presentations and posters at EdMedia and their other conferences. Her areas of expertise are instructional design and development, grant writing and management, as well as visual and video design. She has conducted research is in distance learning, cognitive speed, mobile learning, technology integration and flipped classrooms.

 

Roland Klemke, Open University of The Netherlands

Executive Committee Member: 2023 – 2025

Biography: Roland Klemke is professor of Technology-enhanced Learning and Innovation of the Faculty of Educational Science of the Open University of the Netherlands. Roland also holds a professorship for game informatics at Cologne Game Lab, TH Köln, Cologne, Germany. His research interests and teaching subjects include artificial intelligence for education, multimodal learning experiences, augmented- and mixed-reality, multi-sensor architectures, serious gaming, game-based learning, gamification, and mobile learning. Additionally, he is member of the board of Humance AG, a Cologne based software development company, coordinating research and development activities. He received his degree in Computer Science in 1997 from University of Kaiserslautern and a doctoral degree from RWTH Aachen in 2002. Roland is member of Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI), fellow of the Interuniversity Center for Educational Sciences (ICO) and fellow of the Dutch research school information and knowledge systems (SIKS).

Gerald Knezek, University of North Texas, USA

Biography: Dr. Gerald Knezek is Regents Professor of Learning Technologies at the University of North Texas and Director of the Institute for the Integration of Technology into Teaching & Learning ( IITTL) at UNT. He is Past President (2008-2011) of the Society for Information Technology & Teacher Education (SITE). He was a Fulbright Senior Specialist to The Netherlands during 2006-07. Dr. Knezek received his B.A. in Mathematics and the Social Sciences from Dartmouth College , and his M.Ed. and Ph.D. degrees in Educational Psychology from the University of Hawaii.

 

 

 

Karel Kreijns, Open University, The Netherlands

Biography: Karel Kreijns is associate professor at the Welten Institute of the Open University of the Netherlands. His primary research interests are computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) and online networked learning, the application of Self-Determination Theory , the I-Change model, and the Reasoned Action Approach on teachers’ use of technology/Open Educational resources, enrolling in MOOCs, and teachers’ professional development activities (e.g., innovative behavior, action research, 21st century skills).

 

 

 

Sarah Prestridge
Griffith University,
Australia

Biography: Conceptualising what is considered effective teaching in a digital world has been a major part of Sarah’s research. Since the completion of her PhD in 2007, Sarah has investigated the integration of digital technologies through the relationship between epistemological and pedagogical beliefs. She identified the process involved in shifting instructional practices for effective engagement with digital tools. Throughout her research into professional development she has also explored the tension between face-to-face, online and self-generating professional learning, conceptualising how teachers learn online. Erkko Sointu, University of Eastern Finland, Finland

Biography: Erkko Sointu is a Professor of Special Education at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF). His research, educational and innovative learning development interests lie in special education (behavioral and emotional strengths, behavioral assessment, support), as well as basic and higher education (e.g., learning analytics, flipped approaches, and technology in education). Additionally, Erkko is co-leader of UEF Learning in Digitized Society (DIGS) Research Community (RC) research area for pedagogy and support of learning. He has been involved and led several large national projects. Erkko is also trained teacher with experience of both comprehensive and higher education, and holds title of docent of quantitative research methods in educational sciences (University of Lapland, Rovaniemi, Finland).

Madalina Tincu, Johns Hopkins University, United States

Biography: Madalina Tincu is a Senior Instructional Designer at the Academic Advanced Programs Instructional Resource Center, Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins University. She provides vision, leadership, and management in designing, developing, and delivering courses in various formats, research, and technology-enhanced instructional materials to support standards of excellence guided by Quality Matters Standards and Quality Assurance guidelines.
She received her Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction with focus on Instructional Technology and
International Education in 2008. In her twenty years of higher education experience, Madalina has also served as a faculty, Assistant Director for International Recruitment and Enrollment, Instructional Development Coordinator, and Quality Matters Peer Reviewer and consultant. Her research and academic interests include a) conceptualizing a course supported by a dynamic faculty – instructional designer relationship built on a systematic process and storytelling, b) the instructional design and
alignment of all course formats following quality assurance and diversity, equity, and inclusion guidelines, and c) integration and adaptation of innovative technologies in online learning with focus on Universal Design for Learning.

Peter Weber, Fachhochschule Sudwetfalen, Germany

Biography: Peter Weber is Professor at South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences in Soest, Germany, teaching computer science & e-business and serving as the head of the Competence Center E-Commerce (CCEC). He received his doctoral degree and postdoctoral degree for his work on E-Learning Business Models and Educational Service Engineering at Ruhr-Universität Bochum. In his research, he focuses on E-Business and E-Learning, looking at implications of technology-driven change in various industries, including education and retail.

 

Edgar Weippl, University of Vienna, Austria

Biography: Edgar Weippl is Research Director of SBA Research and associate professor at TU Wien. His research interests are information security, awareness training and teaching information security to engineers.
Edgar is member of the editorial board of Computers & Security (COSE), organizes the ARES conference and was General Chair of SACMAT 2015, PC Chair of Esorics 2015, General Chair of ACM CCS 2016 and is PC Chair of SACMAT 2017.
