1998 Pilot
Adobe - SITE Educational Partnership

wpe2.gif (1382 bytes)

The Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education (SITE) and Adobe announce establishment of a jointly sponsored pilot Adobe-SITE Educational Partnership (AEP). The purpose of this pilot program is to facilitate integration of educational technologies in the teacher education curriculum.

Ubiquitous, inexpensive educational technologies will have little effect on teaching and learning unless public school teachers receive appropriate preparation in their use. The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education notes that approximately six percent of the nation’s teachers are replaced by recent graduates of teacher education programs each year. If we prepare the next generation of teachers, they will effectively serve as diffusion agents.

Adobe tools are found in every educational and corporate environment, from print-based instructional materials to web sites. Development of Postscript prepared the way for the desktop publishing revolution. Photoshop is among the most widely-used tools for preparation of graphics for print media and web sites. Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) technologies provide a cross-platform mechanism for distributing electronic documents.

The Adobe partnership with SITE will permit an initial group of schools, colleges, and departments of education to explore ways in which Adobe tools may support teacher education programs. The Adobe-SITE Educational Partnership will enable a pilot group of ten teacher education programs to acquire Adobe software at revenue-neutral prices. The pilot schools selected will be able to purchase 25-seat licenses for any Adobe product for a specific platform (Mac or PC) for $375. (The reimbursement of $15 per seat will allow Adobe to cover royalties and handling expenses.) Creation of a revenue-neutral educational partnership (i.e., Adobe will not generate a profit or a loss on the transaction) will facilitate expansion of the program in subsequent years if the pilot is a success.

This partnership will permit participating teacher education programs to explore ways in which professional tools can be incorporated into the teacher education curriculum.

Curriculum-Based Submissions

Curriculum-based applications would demonstrate how they would integrate Adobe tools into the teacher education curriculum. They will be accompanied by a course listing, documenting the course or courses incorporating use of Adobe tools into student learning objectives. Teacher education programs that employ course integration strategies will be requested to post the work of teacher education students who participated in the course on their web sites, given appropriate permissions to do so by individual students. This work and other materials related to course outcomes should be posted by February 1, 1999.

Project-Based Submissions

Project-based submissions will consist of proposals for development of instructional tools or products for either K-12 or higher education that can be incorporated into the teacher education curriculum. These tools or products must be created with Adobe tools and will be made available on the Web. The multimedia modules developed for the Making of Ethnic America site will be made available to applicants as an illustrative model. Multimedia modules or other instructional materials related to project-based submissions should be completed by February 1, 1999.

Selection Criteria

Applications will be reviewed by a panel of judges drawn from the SITE publications committee. They will rank the applications they review. Adobe can aggregate the points and identify the pilot locations. We hope to notify pilot locations by June 15, 1998.

Application Criteria (50 points total) – Select One (A or B)

SITE 99 Adobe Workshop

Participating teacher education programs will be invited to a pre-conference workshop at SITE 99 in San Antonio. The normal workshop fee will be waived. The workshop will combine sharing of Adobe-SITE Educational Partnership courses and projects by participating universities with advanced instruction in the integration and use of Adobe tools for course development.

Application Directions

1998 Pilot Adobe-SITE Educational Partnership

An application to participate in the 1998 Adobe-SITE Educational Partnership Program should consist of three items:

  1. a one-page application form with course or project title and contact information,
  2. a narrative of no more than 5 pages (see review criteria in AEP Overview), and
  3. optional supplementary materials such as a course outline or a web address.

Application Form

The application form consists of a single page that includes three pieces of information for the reviewers:

  • the course or project title,
  • contact information for a representative, and
  • brief (two or three sentence descriptions) highlights of elements that reviewers should note when reviewing the application.

An electronic version of the application form is available at the Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education (SITE) web site at "http://www.aace.org/site".

Directions for Narrative

The pilot Adobe Educational Program is intended to simplify the application process for applicants and reviewers (a panel drawn from the SITE publications committee). An application narrative of no more than five pages may be included. Fewer pages are acceptable; if you can explain the course project clearly in a two-page description, do so. For example, a narrative might consist of a paragraph outlining the objectives, a page describing the course or project, a half-page detailing evaluation plans, and a half-page drawing the reviewers’ attention to innovative elements.

Optional Supplementary Materials

Supplementary materials such as a course outline or syllabus may be included in an appendix accompanying the narrative. In the interest of simplifying the process, it is permissible to include accompanying materials such as an existing course outline that may be helpful in interpreting the application. Supplementary materials are limited to a maximum of 15 pages. These materials are optional (i.e., permitted but not required).

If an existing web site contains information or materials that would constitute a useful supplement to the application, the address for the web site can be included in the appendix as well. Applicants should note that the judges are likely to use a variety of platforms (Mac, PC, and Unix workstations) and browsers (Netscape and Internet Explorer).
