Abstract:
The Google Wave tool is a multimedia, collaborative environment that allows for simultaneous shared communications and project development. As projects are developed, they can be “played back” as a slide show for visual documentation of collaborative work. This hands-on BYOL workshop will first explore the potential of the Google Wave as the next major step in the evolution of Web 2.0 and then examine its potential as an educational tool. Acting as "wavers," participants will create their own "blips" as part of a multimedia Wave created within the SITE workshop.

Objectives:
As a powerful platform for document creation, Google's Wave can be used in a variety of environments, including educational settings. Armed with their own laptops, and under the guidance of workshop leaders, participants will
1. Be provided an introduction to the Wave and its various features.
2. Set up and fine tune their own Wave accounts.
3. Explore key Wave features.
4. Participate in a Wave created within the workshop.
5. Contribute of at least two blips--one text-based, another non-text based--as part of the workshop Wave.
6. Work collaboratively to add an "extension tool" into the Wave.
7. Be given an opportunity to reflect upon the potential of the Wave as a powerful educational tool.
8. Contribute specific examples and models to the workshop Wave on how this tool can be used in an educational setting.

Outline:
1. Introductions and workshop overview. (15 minutes)
2. Logging into the Wave and fine tuning participant accounts (15 mins)
3. Creating a SITE workshop-dedicated Wave, with active participant participation (30 mins.)
4. Active participation in workshop wave, with participant contribution of multiple blips, collaborative addition of gadgets and extensions (60 mins.)
5. Reflection on the Wave as an educational tool (30 mins.)
6. Participant contributions of blips to SITE Wave that focus on educational applications of the Wave. (60 mins.)

Prerequisites:
Participants should bring their own laptop with a wireless card. They should also have a free Google account, ideally, with access to the Wave.
