Abstract:
This hands-on workshop will increase knowledge of how to incorporate web 2.0 tools into blended classroom instruction to develop digital literacy skills in students. Teachers will participate in an online course, engaging in web 2.0-based activities that demonstrate how to build student-centered web activities for students. Workshop participants will explore an array of technology and Internet-based tools such as blogs, wikis, storyboards and virtual field trips while building a lesson plan for their classroom students using those tools. Student work from prior sessions will be demonstrated, and teachers will discuss how to use these tools to change the student-teacher relationship as a way to maximize student achievement and model effective blended teaching.
Objectives:
Through active participation in an online professional development course, participants will
- Learn how blended instruction supports a student-centered approach to teaching and learning
- Review the purpose and use of a variety of web 2.0 tools in blended classrooms
- Develop in-depth knowledge of the use of a selected Web 2.0 tool in a student-centered blended instruction classroom
- Build a web 2.0-based lesson plan for use in classes

Prerequisites:
This workshop is intended for teachers eager to develop the skills necessary for blended learning, by adding web 2.0-based activities to classroom instruction, as well as experienced online teachers eager to learn the latest pedagogy and online methodology. This will be a highly interactive, Internet-based session. Laptops are required!

Instructor Qualifications:
Tracy Sheehan is head of educational programs for VHS and has most recently been responsible for the development of VHS's online professional development courses in blended learning for classroom teachers, as well as lead developer for online International Baccalaureate courses. Previously, Tracy was lead facilitator for Virtual High School’s online professional development courses and an online teacher in science. She has her Bachelor of Science and Master of Education in Secondary Life Science Education. Tracy has taught grades 9-12 including Honors Science, Honors Chemistry, Honors Biology, Advanced Placement Biology, Bioethics, and an online course, BioEthics Symposium. She acted as a mentor to students that have been winners at both the Regional and Massachusetts State Science Fair. Tracy has designed curriculum for newly offered electives, Bioethics and Methods in Science, while also mentoring new teachers within the department and student teachers from area colleges. She has attended Taft AP Summer Institute as well as many other AP workshops and is a member of the AP Biology Listserve. Tracy has presented at the NSELA Summer Institute and is the recipient of a Compaq Education grant, and Westborough Educational Foundation grant for science curriculum development.

She is a founding Board of Directors member of the North American Council for Online Learning (NACOL), is currently serving on the Board of Directors of Ontario E-Learning Consortium, serves on the Blackboard Client Strategy Council and has served on the Blackboard Idea Exchange Steering Committee, U.S. Department of Education National Online Education Policy Forum and the NCREL Blue Ribbon Panel for Online Education.
