Invited SpeakerThe role of design and aesthetics is often overlooked, and occasionally dismissed, in the multifaceted field of education. Moreover, aesthetics is an increasingly important dimension missing from the current research base in the Instructional Design and Learning Sciences fields. To this extent, we have positioned our work at the crossroads of design and science, a true design-based research approach to exploring the synthesis of technology, education, and experience. From engaging millions of students from around the world through adventure learning to the design of transformative online and mobile learning environments that promote engaged discovery of user-generated data, Doering and Miller will showcase the role of design and aesthetics in the future of online learning and how they are exploring the formidable roles of education and sustainability on all seven continents.
Dr. Aaron Doering holds the Bonnie Westby-Huebner Endowed Chair of Education and Technology and is an assistant professor in Learning Technologies at the University of Minnesota. His research involves designing and researching online learning environments, technology integration in K-12 preservice and inservice settings, and the innovative use of technology to support teaching and learning. A 2008 Laureate of the prestigious humanitarian Tech Awards, Doering has received millions of dollars in grants and has published over 60 journal articles, books, book chapters and conference proceedings. Currently, he is the PI of three grants: GoNorth! Adventure Learning with support from the Best Buy Children's Foundation; What's Climate Change to You? with support from the National Science Foundation; and Learning Geography through Geospatial Technologies with support from the National Geographic Society. He can be reached at adoering@umn.edu.
Charles Miller is an assistant professor of Learning Technologies (LT) at the University of Minnesota and Co-Director of the LT Media Lab in the College of Education and Human Development. Currently, Miller serves as the Chair of the Computer and Internet Applications in Education (CIAE) SIG in the American Educational Research Association (AERA).
Miller’s research explores opportunities to transform the instructional experience through design, bridging the gap between aesthetic learning experiences and interaction design. With more than 15 years of design, development, and research experience, Miller is a seasoned interaction designer awarded by organizations including USA Today, AECT, The Washington Post, American Scientist, IBM, Adobe, the International Association of Science and Technology for Education, and Yahoo! for his work on projects ranging from environmental expeditions and political campaigns to artist galleries and educational initiatives. Miller has published more than 70 journal articles, book chapters, and conference proceedings on topics ranging from aesthetics and e-assessment to information visualization and role-based design. In addition, Miller has given more than 100 international, national, keynote, and local presentations on design.
In addition to teaching graduate courses on interaction design and App development, Miller is the PI and Co-PI on several projects including AvenueDHH, an e-assessment environment to help deaf and hard-of-hearing students (grades K-8) improve reading, writing, and literacy development; Earthducation, 7-continent expedition to explore the global intersections of education and sustainability; Explore15, a user-driven adventure learning online environment for students across the U.S. to explore and collaborate on diverse environmental issues; and AvenueASL, an e-assessment environment for postsecondary American Sign Language (ASL) instruction.
