The focus of this presentation is on exploring ways to engage learners in collaborative and reflective blended learning experiences using the latest findings of research using the community of inquiry framework. Our goal is to give practical direction founded on sound research. In order to understand the complex dynamics of a blended learning experience we will provide the conceptual foundation necessary to study and understand blended teaching and learning. We will focus on seven principles of blended learning deductively derived from the Community of Inquiry framework that will provide a perspective to explore blended learning strategies and techniques. With the widespread adoption of Web 2.0 technologies, the question is whether blended learning is the choice for the design of interactive and engaged learning experiences. Finally, we will discuss whether blended learning represents a conceptual and practical breakthrough in enhancing the quality of higher education in a cost-effective manner?
Dr. Vaughan is an instructor in the Faculty of Teaching & Learning at Mount Royal College in Calgary. His research investigates whether interactive learning technologies (social networking sites, blogs and wikis) can be used to design and support assessment activities that increase levels of student engagement. Norm has particular interests in blended learning and faculty development and co-authored /Blended Learning Higher Education/.
