Opening Keynote & Fireside Chat with Warren Berger

“The Power of Beautiful Questions”

Abstract: The overall presentation includes a talk and slide presentation in which bestselling author Warren Berger focuses on how asking the right questions can help us to be more curious and open to new ideas and viewpoints, while also helping us to innovate in the workplace. Berger will also show how better questioning skills can yield increased collaboration and more effective leadership. The talk will include a mix of inspirational stories about the surprising power of questions, as well as practical tips and takeaways (including both online resources and print handouts) — on how to spark your own curiosity, formulate better questions, and work on shared “mission questions” with colleagues. The takeaways are designed to provide tools and action steps that people can take back to work and begin using immediately.

This talk will include interactive discussion and audience participation throughout, to keep everyone engaged.

Biography: Warren Berger believes questions are more important than answers. He is the author of the international best-selling book
A More Beautiful Question. And in Fall of 2018, he published his new book, entitled The Book of Beautiful Questions.

Berger also writes for Fast Company, Harvard Business Review, and The New York Times. He has appeared on The Today Show, CNN, and National Public Radio.

In his work, Warren has interviewed and studied hundreds of the world’s leading innovators and creative thinkers, to analyze how they ask fundamental questions, solve problems, and create new possibilities. He has conducted questioning workshops at the NASA space program, and has brought questioning ideas and exercises into companies such as Microsoft, Pepsi, and Starbucks. He also visits schools all around the country, urging teachers to try to encourage more questioning in the classroom.

Katie Martin, AltSchool

Abstract:The desire to change how students learn is often expressed as a goal but in the modern world, the teacher’s role must also evolve. This talk will focus on the characteristics of learner-centered experiences and how why we must ensure education sparks curiosity, ignites passion, and unleashsgenius.  If we embrace the role of the learner and the dynamic learning process, we can create experiences that empower learners to take ownership of their learning and reach their full potential.

Biography: Dr. Katie Martin is the VP of Professional Learning at AltSchool. She has worked in diverse contexts to learn, research, and support deeper learning for all students.  She has also served as a middle school English language arts teacher, instructional coach, and led the district new teacher mentoring program.  Katie has a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in middle school education and her Ph.D and in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on the support that impacts teacher efficacy and retention.

At the university, district, and school level Katie aspires to create experiences that empower all learners to develop knowledge, skills, and mindsets to thrive in a changing world. As a mom, she wants her kids to have learning experiences in school that build on their strengths and interests and as an educator; she is passionate about making sure we do the same for all kids. Katie’s experience in research and practice continue to guide her belief that if we want to change how students learn, we must change how educators learn.

What’s On the Horizon for Educational Technology

Abstract: Because the “technology” dimension of the field, educational technology tends to have a future orientation. We seek out the newest technologies and look for ways to integrate them into our work. So what’s on the horizon for our field in the next five to ten years? Working with the 2019 Horizon Report from Educause and the experts in the room (you!), this interactive session explores where technologies are most and least likely to affect teaching and learning, support of students, the management of educational endeavors, and work lives in general, and suggests how participants can prepare themselves for what’s on the horizon.

Bio: Saul Carliner, PhD, CTDP is a professor at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec. He is also director of Graduate Programs in Educational Technology and director of Graduate Certificate in University Teaching in the Department of Education. Saul currently serves as the E-Learn conference program chair.

Urban Myths About E-learning and Education

Abstract: To make sure technology rather helps than hinders learning, it is key to have a clear vision on what could work and what is a popular but debunked idea. In their book on urban myths about learning and education, Pedro De Bruyckere, Paul A. Kirschner and Casper Hulshof have been trying to perform a big clear-out. Sadly, one book was not enough as new myths keep popping up while old ones refuse to die, so a second book is forthcoming with again the same 3 labels: ‘total nonsense‘, ‘nuanced’ or ‘we don’t know as research is lacking’. In his keynote Pedro De Bruyckere will both discuss the persistence of some popular myths in the science of e-learning based on new collected data and dispel some new relevant myths for the field.

Bio: Pedro De Bruyckere (°1974) is an educational scientist (PhD) at Arteveldehogeschool, Ghent and Leiden University. He is co-author of the popular book Urban Myths about Learning and Education and author of The Ingredients for Great Teaching. Pedro De Bruyckere is avid edublogger on TheEconomyOfMeaning.com.
