Crafting Learning Objects for New Media

Abstract:


 Learning is migrating out of textbooks and pre-set courses onto the web, via a series of new media - podcasting, blogging, social networks, etc. However, the new media require new messages, new pedagogical guidelines, and new, 'granular' formats, if they are to be effective. What are the parameters of the creation of new learning objects? What makes them effective? What are the pitfalls and common mistakes? Ken Carroll offers his insights.
 

 

Biographical Information:

 

I believe we’re about to see great change, at a pace we have not previously experienced. As the web matures we’re seeing massive implications for learning and therswe days, learning is everything.

I wear 3 business hats.

In 1996, I co-founded the Kai En English Language Training Center in Shanghai www.kaien.net.cn. Kai En has now grown into a chain of schools around the city. I sit on the board of directors there but I no longer have an operational role in the company.

In 2005, I co-founded ChinesePod as a brand under Praxis Language. I work as senior adviser and investor to Praxis. This includes a role at ChinesePod (PR, hosting some lessons, board duties, etc).

My 3rd hat is On Demand Training, a company I also co-founded (2007). Our focus is on developing learning content in the mobile web - a very promising area, I believe.
